Water tank cleaning & disinfection

The cleaning and disinfection of cold water storage tanks should be conducted in accordance with BS EN 806-5:2012, BS8558:2015, BS PD 855468:2015 and the guidelines issued by the Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI).

To determine overall cleanliness we recommend that all cold water tanks be visually inspected at least every 12 months together with 6 Monthly water sampling to determine if cleaning, disinfection, repair or replacement is required.

Guidelines issued by the Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) concerning water tanks serving drinking water require these to be drained, cleaned and disinfected as required.

Additionally, water sampling should be carried out every 6 months. Such cold water storage tanks should also comply with the WRAS regulations and Bylaw 30 (England and Wales). Note however that if the storage tank does not serve drinking water then there is no specific requirement to clean the tank annually.
